Programme Description
The Associate of Arts Degree in Primary Education is designed to meet the needs of persons who are desirous of teaching in the primary school, but particularly at the upper levels. It will involve having students meet the General Education requirements in Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural and Health Sciences (41 credits), and the major courses in education (37 credits). The latter include studies in child development, introduction to teaching, issues related to education, inclusive education, literacy, oral communication skills for the teacher, classroom management and field experiences. Students may pursue studies full time or part-time.
Programme Objectives
The programme is designed to provide students with the following:
- a sound general education foundation in the areas of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and computers
- the skills to examine the theories surrounding child growth and development from birth to the middle years
- an understanding of the principles of teaching and the application of these principles to the upper level primary classroom environment
- the communication skills to utilize to the fullest the human, material and technical resources available in the primary school community
- knowledge of literacy and the development of these skills in the upper primary classrooms
- the ability to cope with special needs children in the inclusive classroom
- knowledge of the English Language and its applicability to the classroom
- opportunities to observe and participate in actual teaching situations
- the skills to engage in life-long learning for advancing academic and personal growth
- the knowledge and skills to pursue additional and higher qualifications in education at local and international institutions of higher learning
