Bachelor of Education Degree Programme in Primary Education


Programme Description

The Bachelor of Education Degree in Primary Education is designed to meet the needs of persons who are desirous of teaching in the primary/elementary school. It will involve having students meet the General Education requirements in Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural and Health Sciences (38 credits), education core courses (36 credits) and the major courses in education (66 credits). The latter include studies in child development, introduction to teaching, issues related to education, inclusive education, literacy, oral communication skills, curriculum development and methodology courses. There is also a practicum component. Students may pursue studies full time or part-time.

N.B. An Associate Degree will be awarded upon completion of PEDU 290.

Programme Objectives

The programme is designed to provide students with the following:

  • a sound general education foundation in the areas of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and computers
  • the skills to examine the theories surrounding child growth and development from birth to the middle years
  • an understanding of the principles of teaching and the application of these principles in the primary classroom.
  • An understanding of curriculum development, classroom testing and measurement and research based skills.
  • the communication skills to utilize to the fullest the human, material and technical resources available in the primary school community
  • knowledge of literacy and other content-based skills and the utilization of these skills in the classrooms
  • the ability to cope with special needs children in the inclusive classroom
  • a  basic understanding of the components of  Language and the applicability of this knowledge in the classroom
  • opportunities to observe and participate in actual teaching situations
  • the skills to engage in life-long learning for advancing academic and personal growth
  • the knowledge and skills to pursue additional and higher qualifications in education at local and international institutions of higher learning
