Certificate of Early Childhood Education (Preschool)

Programme Description

The Early Childhood Education Certificate Programme is designed to meet the needs of persons who are desirous of working with infants, toddlers and young children up to age 5. It focuses on child development, educational theories, classroom management, curriculum planning, relationship building, leadership, special needs and creative experiences which are tailored to meet the needs of the preschooler. This year and a half long vocational programme will culminate with a 135 hour teaching practicum.

Programme Objectives

Upon completion of this programme students should be able to:

• Understand young children’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional development.
• Provide their students with meaningful educational experiences in the socialization process, and skills in areas such as the language arts, mathematics and basic science.
• Use standard English in the formal education process.
• Establish and maintain an environment that supports diversity and inclusion.
• Identify and develop appropriate materials for teaching young children.
• Implement methods and strategies to care for and teach young children.
• Maintain order in the classroom and help students regulate their own behaviour.
• Communicate effectively in dealing with young children and their parents/guardians, in fostering the development of these children.
