Our History

The  Bahamas Baptist University College (BBUC) which was established in September 1995, has become the nation’s largest private college and second largest tertiary institution.

BBUC is the tertiary arm of the Baptist Education system and represents a bold commitment on the part of The Bahamas National Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention (Bahamas National Baptist Convention) to respond to the tertiary needs in fostering national and human development.  The College was establised under the leadership of President Emeritus of the Bahamas National Baptist Convention, Rev. Dr. C. W. Saunders, CBE, JP, with continued development and physical expansion under the leadership of Rev. Dr. William Thompson, CMG, JP,  President of The Bahamas National Baptist Convention.  Sir Baltron B. Bethel, KCMG has served over the years as Chairman of The Bahamas Baptist University College Board of Trustees, and twice as President.   Successive Presidents have included Dr. Brendamae Cleare, Dr. Celestine Williams, Dr. Beulah Gardiner-Farquharson, Mrs. Vernette Ferdinand (Acting) Dr. Juliett V. Reid, and Dr. Theresa Adderley-Smith (The Current President). 

The College Council which is appointed by the President of The Bahamas National Baptist Convention, has overall responsibility for the affairs and governance of the College.  The President of the College has responsibility for planning and day to day administration.  The Academic Board which reports to the President comprises the Dean of Academic Affairs, Registrar, faculty heads and relevant staff.

While pursuing excellence in education in a Christian, non-discriminating and equal opportunity environment, the College is committed to providing access to tertiary and continuing education for as many as possible at all levels of society.

A significant number of BBUC graduates hold key positions in both the public and private sectors, with many others making meaningful contributions for the public good through their numerous fields of endeavour.

BBUC is a tertiary level institution that is approved by the National Accreditation and Equivalency Council of The Bahamas (NAECOB) to offer Bachelor degrees, Associate degrees and Certificates across the various academic divisions of Business and Administrative Studies, Humanities, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences.  The College continues to maintain a College Preparatory Programme as well, which is widely embraced by the many students who do not possess the full prerequisites to pursue college level studies.

Credits earned at BBUC are easily transferable to other colleges and universities both locally and abroad.   BBUC has established relationships, Articulation Agreements, Memoranda of Understanding and Collaboration Agreements with other Colleges and Universities including the University of The Bahamas, The University of The West Indies, Florida Memorial University and The Council of Community Colleges of Jamaica (CCCJ).

BBUC maintains a well qualified faculty and staff who are dedicated to working with students individually and collectively to succeed in their studies and to realize their full potential.   The institution caters to both mature and younger adults, offering day and evening classes to facilitate full-time as well as part-time studies.
